In The Essential Nutrients to have a Balanced Diet I was talking about diets and lifestyles. Through the years my husband Tom and I have developed our own lifestyle, based on our preferences, experiences and (of lately) ailments.

We have to study and know a certain diet or lifestyle before we can decide if we will fully embrace it or take elements out of it. And most of the time we decide the latter. I am so happy that Tom and I both love to try new things and experiment. 

This article is a review of the Vegan Changers, go vegan challenge. If you have decided it is time to change your lifestyle habits, you need to know what you can expect from this program. Will it benefit you? Does the program give you enough handles to know what you can do best?

What are good reasons to change your lifestyle?

“How much did you gain?”, my friend asked me the other day. And at first I had no idea what she was talking about. Oh, wait, my weight, because of the lock down due to the virus. I answered: “I lost weight since the beginning of the lock down.” 

This is usually not what people who struggle with their weight like to hear. Somehow it feels nicer to all be in the same boat. And to not be confronted with our own lack of discipline, because that is what it all comes down to, isn’t it? 

Changing what we eat can be a great boost to build enough discipline to maintain a change of lifestyle. Because it keeps us busy with all the new things, so we don’t have time to step into our usual pitfalls. And because it is exciting to learn and taste new things.

Trying veganism is a great idea 

Veganism is committed to avoiding the use of animal products. As the Vegan Society says: … a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose.

Smoothies are a great way to start the day healthy

The vegan diet is a plant-based one. The term was first used in 1944 by animal rights activist Donald Watson as a variation of vegetarianism. Vegetarians do eat eggs, dairy and honey. 

Tom and I have been vegetarians for years and I remember our first vacation in a resort in the early 80s. People had no idea what to serve vegetarians (let alone vegans), so we ate omelet and vegetables or lettuce for 14 days in a row. Yikes.

Thank goodness vegetarianism and veganism have become more mainstream, so the meals can be very imaginative. 

Why veganism is good for your health

Vegans are often very healthy people, because vegetables contain fibers, vitamins and minerals. Research shows that vegetables have a positive effect on your health, because they lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol.

One of the reasons also is of course that vegans are overall more conscious of food and the impact on the environment.

It goes without saying that the condition is to eat varied.

Why veganism can be bad for your health

One-sided food put vegans at risk of developing a deficiency in iron, protein, vitamin B12 and iodine. Not eating enough protein for a long time will cause a breakdown of the muscles. And a vitamin B12 deficiency can have consequences for your nervous system. 

Nuts contain a lot of calcium, but you will have to eat a lot of nuts to get the required daily amount. This is especially a risk for aging people. 

These risks do not only apply to vegans. There are plenty of meat eaters who eat too few vegetables, causing them to build up a shortage of essential nutrients as well.

Can the Vegan Changers Program help you to change?

At some point I skipped dairy from my diet. The reason for that decision were the huge eczema and mucus problems I had. I didn’t know if dairy was to blame, but I was very motivated to give it a try. 

For me it was especially hard to avoid cheese. I love cheese! Especially all those French types. In a way it was good I didn’t find replacements in the beginning. This way I was forced to look for other tastes.

Lots of variation

That is what I like about the Vegan Changers: the variety of meals and especially desserts! What to think of 250 delicious vegan desserts recipes? 

Structure of the program

The program is a 28-day Go vegan challenge, divided in weeks. Every week has a grocery list and a meal plan. Easy does it 🙂

Next to the week plans there are chapters with info on veganism, substitutes and motivation. Although the main page – in my opinion – about motivation is in the Bonus section. 

The layout is clear. I am a sucker for design and user-friendliness. Aspects that do well at Vegan Changers.

Are there enough guidelines?

As it is hard to start something new, there needs to be enough information without the risk of overwhelm. Because of the clear menu structure, you can skip chapters if you are impatient and go right for the recipes and grocery lists.

Yet for anyone who wants to go more in-depth there is ample information in the form of text and videos. 

What do I miss in the program?

Changing on your own is hard. Having enough self-discipline to work yourself consistently through an online program is extremely hard. Nataly of Vegan Changers does send you emails to keep you enthusiastic, but I miss a group or some form of accountability.

Personally I would emphasize organic produce. If you’re motivated by animal welfare, you might as well expand your idealism to nature in general? 

Is support accessible and quick?

If a program is solid, you won’t need much support. So I didn’t have to ask for problem solving. But I did have contact with Nataly and thought her answers were quick, to the point and friendly.

What is my final conclusion?

It’s quite obvious that I am enthusiastic about Vegan Changers, go vegan challenge. In fact, I wish everyone would try this for at least 28 days. It’s good for your health, for the environment and for your purse as well, because plant based products are usually cheaper than meat and fish.

  1. I am really leaning towards Vegan diet changes. I don’t know if I necessarily need a program to do it. It’s interesting, when I think about changing to a vegan diet I don’t necessarily consider the effects it also has on the environment.
    You really made me think on that one. Within the past month I have now incorporated a veggie/fruit smoothie into my diet on a daily basis. Two days ago I slipped up and didn’t have the smoothie. I felt guilty. Which shows me it has now become a habit. That’s a good thing, vegetables and fruit consumption is a good habit to have. But that’s another reason I think I would be able to switch to a vegan diet.
    I do think I would benefit by utilizing the grocery list and meal plan within Vegan Changers. So I will definitely think about this.

  3. That’s a very interesting program. The more I was reading, the more I became convinced – I’ll try it, cause honestly I didn’t grow up like that and I don’t know many vegan meals. This is super helpful!

    It is a very informative article. I realized that vegan meals are good for our health. I knew that several years ago. But as a “Meat Lover”, I need a very strong motivation to push me to become a vegetarian. I think Vegan Changers may help me since it provides a useful grocery list and meal plan together with enthusiastic emails. So, I’ll try this program for 28 days to see the result.   5. I think it’s a very good idea to go vegan. I have never been much into meat. When I think it was alive, I don’t eat it, I can’t eat it. I eat vegetables fruit and oats like oatmeal. You have a very nice website and good content. Keep up the good work.

    I will openly admit that “total” veganism isn’t really my thing – I simply love my meat too much.

    However, I discovered that I was lactose intolerant fairly late on in the day (well obviously only a mild intolerance), as I continued to consume dairy products for many, many years.

    It wasn’t until a few years ago I started experimenting with certain vegan produce as a replacement for some of the things I was missing, and to my surprise I actually quite enjoyed my new discoveries.

    I now consume the occasional vegan meal in its own right, but whenever I do I thoroughly enjoy them.

    The main thing that caught my eye in your vegan changers review was the “250 delicious vegan dessert recipes” – I’ve always had a sweet tooth, but since dropping dairy from my life I have become extremely wary of any desserts I now eat.

    So, this could well be the perfect solution.

  7. I find your posts highly informative and always something to learn from! I know some people aren’t vegan by choice and lack in those nutrients you’ve mentioned in this post such as the B12 and the sad thing is that they are not aware of it!
